Memorizing Scripture

Storing Gods word in our minds and getting it into our hearts through memorization, can be literally life transforming in its effect. Look at Psalm 1 or read how Jesus used the scripture which he had memorized in order to confront the tempter that assaulted Him when he was in the wilderness for 40 days. (Read Luke 4).

The Value of Memorizing Scripture.
1. It will give us confidence in  sharing the gospel, the good news with unbelievers, and help us to know what to say.
“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” 1 Peter 3:152. It is part of our spiritual armor and protects our mind from those UNtruths all around us in the media, and those UNtruths we may have absorbed in the past, that affect how we live or how we think about ourselves or about God or about other people;
“Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devils schemes….Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6: 11, 17
3. Gods word has power to change our attitudes and behavior from the inside out.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3 16
“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews.4:12
4. Gods word provides direction.  Reminding ourselves and each other of what Gods word says, will save us from making bad decisions and guide us into right decisions,
“Your Word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path. Ps. 119:105
5. When Gods word is stored in our hearts through memorizing and meditating upon it, it protects against stress and anxiety.
“… Your promises to me are my hope. They give me strength in all my troubles; how they refresh and revive me!” Ps. 119:49 (LB)
6. It also provides comfort when we are overwhelmed with sadness
“Your words are what sustain me … They bring joy to my sorrowing heart and delight me.” Jer. 15:16 (LB)
7. It provides ammunition against temptation
“I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Ps. 119:11
